It's been a while since I've done a painting of a porch. This one is based on photo references from the small town of Arrow Rock, Missouri. 

Porch on Park Street

Porches always remind me of my youth growing up in my small hometown.  In the warm weather months the occupants of the homes would spend time during the evening on their porches. Setting and talking with neighbors was a common scene.  I still sense that warm relaxed feeling when viewing artwork such as this one.

The reflections on the glass were the incentive for painting this piece.

Welcome Home

Porch on Oak Street

Another in the "Porch Series."  This is the first brick porch that I've painted.  The morning sunlight was at the right angle to produce the diagonal shadows.

Porch on Main Street

I drove by this porch for years while on my way to the school where I taught.  I finally took my camera along one day and photographed the house.  Those photos were used as reference in this painting.

October Porch

The "Porch Series" continues with this autumn themed painting.  Growing up as a kid in the late 1950's the porch represented a place to sit and "watch the world go by".  Neighbors would see you there and stop and talk. It was also a place for kids to play.

Annie's Porch

This is the second time I've painted this porch.  The first time was several years ago.  It had fewer flowers but the porch paint was more faded.  To me this symbolizes 20th century America.  It's a time and place slowly fading into the past.

Another painting in the porch series.  I've actually painted this same porch before.  It seems the porch is more in disrepair than in the previous painting.  I enjoy painting it more in this state.  For example I've added more texture on the concrete steps.  The paint is peeling and somewhat faded in certain areas.

I've painted numerous artworks depicting porches over the years.  In this piece the leaves and porch overhang provide for some interesting shadows and light.
