Sunflower Fields Forever

Sunflowers are one of my favorite flowers to paint. In this painting I like the contrast between the blue sky and yellow petals of the sunflower. Many of my pieces are painted on illustration board while this painting is done on wood panel. One advantage is that when displaying, no glass or glazing is required. 

Hay Field Near Fiddler's Hollow

This hay field is located near my home.  The area is known as Fiddler's Hollow.  During the Civil War the small town of Medora (now known as St. Aubert) was a Union army camp site.  A small skirmish took place there.  According to area legend as the fighting began a Union soldier was playing his fiddle. A Confederate bullet ended his life as he played.  Local folklore has it that during the night one can still hear the fiddler playing his last song.

August Hay

This is a very common mid-western landscape.  In this scene the sky is partially overcast.

Picking Daisies

The background paint was applied with freehand airbrush.  This gives the painting a soft dream-like feel.

East Hay Field (Early Morning)

Another in the series of hay field paintings.  Some autumn tree colors are visible on the distant hill side.

Foggy Morning Hay Field

This painting depicts an early morning creek bottom hay field.  Several inches of rain had fallen the previous night.  There's a feel of moist air with the wispy fog.  The ground was very spongy as I walked the field taking photos.

Osage Hay Field

The title is from the Missouri county that I reside in.  The name was taken from the Osage Indians that lived here when the first Europeans explored the area.  The play and movie August:Osage County was named for the Osage county in the state of Oklahoma.
We've been experiencing a dry summer since early July.  This hay field reflects that continued drought in it's golden colors of the cut hay.

Oak Ridge (Mid-morning)

The airbrush was used exclusively to apply the paint to the grass areas in this painting.  I usually use a combination of airbrush and conventional brush for this area of the painting.

The geography of the area where I live is known for its rolling hills.  This painting typifies that geographic feature.

June Hay Field (Looking West)

This hay field is positioned on a high ridge with a great western view.  This painting has a more watercolor appearance.

Green Grass & Blue Skies

Sold      8 by 10 inches,            Acrylic on acid free illustration board.                                            I was fortunate to have been in the right place at the right time when I photographed some hay fields recently.  The crystal blue sky was stunningly beautiful.  I used those photos as reference as I painted this landscape.
