This is my second portrait watercolor painting. Using watercolor in an airbrush is a bit more labor intensive than using acrylic. However, I don't use watercolor in the traditional sense in which the white paper shows through in the painting. I use a white watercolor paint in the airbrush to paint in the whites.

I'm always somewhat apprehensive before beginning a back lit scene like this one. The paint values have to be very precise to make it work.  Again I am happy with the final results.

Color Me Springtime

The "tromp'loeil" series continues.   The drawing in this painting is based on a picture drawn by my grandchild.  As an elementary art instructor for thirty years I saw countless numbers of artwork done by children.  Yet each one was interesting and enjoyable to view.

The background paint was applied with freehand airbrush.  This gives the painting a soft dream-like feel.

The light in this painting is more subdued.   The sun is partially shining through the enveloping cloud cover.

Most of my recent beach paintings have had lighting from the back of the figure.  The figure is thus cast into a silhouette.  The lighting in this piece is different.  It illuminates the figure causing brighter colors.

Water reflections are difficult to paint.  This one worked because the reflection colors were somewhat simple.

I thought it was time to paint a portrait again.  This painting was a challenge since I usually paint portraits using a strong light which causes dark shadows.  The light on the model in this case was more diffused.
I also did the painting on wood panel which is a great surface for painting portraits.  The panel works well in that if you make a mistake it's easy to correct the problem by covering the previous color.  When I work on illustration board it's difficult to do that.
