Sunset Over the Hay Barn

I've painted this scene before but always liked the location of the painting. It brings back pleasant memories from my childhood.

This is the same barn depicted in my painting "Uncle Joe's Barn at Sunset." This barn stood next to our farm in the Missouri River bottom as I was growing up. The faded stain line on the lower section of the barn was caused by the river level at its height during the great flood of 1993. Missouri is one of numerous states that promote "barn quilts." The owner of the barn designs the quilt, and it is painted onto an 8 by 8-foot wood panel. In this painting the foreground shadow is cast from the Missouri River bluff. 

Uncle Frank's Barn

This painting depicts the upper loft area of a barn that has been owned by various family members for over a century. As a teenager in the late 1960s I helped my great uncle put loose hay into this upper loft area. 

Uncle Joe's Barn at Sunset

This is a painting from a few years ago. It depicts my Uncle Joe's barn with a summer sunset. I grew up near this barn and it always seemed like a giant behemoth alone in the Missouri River Bottom. Uncle Joe's house and other out buildings which stood near by had been razed after the great flood of 1993.

A college art professor of mine once stated that painting a barn was like beating a dead horse.  I think he was referring to the fact that the large weathered barn had been painted so many times that it had become too familiar as subject matter.   My version of the barn is set at dusk with a "dusk to dawn" light illuminating the scene.
