Little People Get-Together

I decided to do another "Little People" painting that presented a greater challenge. The exterior of the house was the most difficult. 

House in Autumn

This painting is based on photos from a small near-by town. The autumn leaves match the house trim and roof almost exactly. 

Pump House (June Morning)

This is my third time of painting this old pump house located in Meramac Springs State Park. This painting is a bit more dream-like than my previous pieces.

Spring House

This is the second painting I've done of this building that's located at Meramac Spring State Park in central Missouri. It was originally used as an icehouse in the early 1900s. 

The Little Family Portrait

I purchased a 1960s doll house several years ago. Besides my granddaughters playing with it when they were small, I've used it as a background for several paintings. In this piece I once again used it as a background for the little people family portrait. I used freehand airbrush in the background to make it appear softer and more distant. 

After the January Snowfall

This painting depicts a local house in the Missouri River bottom. The house hasn't had occupants for some time. The great flood of 1993 caused significant damage to many of the structures in the bottom. 

Beach House (Late Evening)

I grew up near the swift currents of the Missouri River, a body of water not known for swimming. As a result, I never learned to swim. However, the ocean has always fascinated me. This painting is based on some recent photos from a vacation trip to Alabama. 

Ice House from the Past

This building is located in Meramec Spring Park in central Missouri. It was originally used as an ice house but today is a generator facility.

House Near Highway 50

Only patches of snow remain on the ground and roof in this piece. Warmer weather had melted the majority of snow from the previous snowfall.

Decoration Day

This painting of an American flag reminds me of my youth. It was common to see flags displayed in this manner as I was growing up especially on Memorial Day. My grandmother always called it "Decoration Day."

House Near Dooling Creek

During the Depression era of the 1930s many new houses constructed at that time were built small.  The economic problems of that era were responsible.  My guess is this local house depicted in my painting was probably constructed at that time.

I used a bit of atmospheric perspective in the distant foliage on the right.  This is relatively easy with the airbrush.  A light layer of sky blue was applied over the foliage.

House Near the River Bottoms

This painting typifies my favorite time of year for landscapes.  It's late winter and the grass is beginning to green while the deciduous trees are still dormant without foliage.

Autumn Splendor

My previous painting "Autumn Dream" was painted using reference photos from a few years ago.  I recently returned to that location to take new reference photos.  This painting is based on those photos.  Within the last week the majority of our tree foliage has turned to an orange and burnt-orange mixture.  I was lucky to capture those colors in my reference photos.

House on Main (Second Floor)

During a watercolor workshop several years ago the teacher mentioned that you usually see some warm orange or brown under the eaves on white clapboard houses.  Those colors are visible on the upper eave in this painting.
