Rust & Stardust

The "Vehicle in Snow" series continues with this latest painting. The title suggests more than a rusting car from the past. To me this vehicle is seen as an iconic relic of a past time which was very different and very romantic. I remember the duck tailed greasers and poodle skirted girls along with the doo wop singing groups as a young child. When I see this painting, those memories are recalled.

November Rail Crossing
I usually paint landscapes and outdoor scenes with strong sunlight. I decided to do a scene with subdued lighting as a change of pace. My childhood home was just a few hundred yards from the Union Pacific Rail line. I still live near the railroad and find myself waiting at the crossing a few times each week. I've always enjoyed graffiti on trains and I couldn't resist combining the subdued lighting with a train scene depicting graffiti.

Sun, Snow & Rust
I've always been fascinated with automobiles and their significance in the American psyche.
That interest is extended to the rusting discarded vehicles from years past. Here my goal was to produce a painting of the vehicle with a brief snow shower and a clearing sky while the remnants of an earlier heavy snowfall are still evident.

Frozen in Time
This is my fifteenth "Vehicle in Snow" painting. Considering all my series of paintings it's the one that has received the most awards in competitions. I think the underlying ecology theme is part of the reason.

Frozen Ford Fairlane
I recently received notification that my painting “Frozen
Ford Fairlane” was accepted for publication in the new North Light Book
“Acrylic Works 5: Bold Values.” I’m very
honored that my artwork was chosen to be included. Numerous artists submitted images and 100
paintings were chosen for publication. Each
artist will write a caption that will accompany their artwork. The caption explains the importance of
“value” in their painting. The expected
publication date is May 5, 2018.

Wasted on the Way
This is my favorite painting from the "Vehicles in Snow" series. The title is from a Crosby Stills & Nash song. To me this painting has a deeper meaning. The automobile represents a person's life. The vehicle was once shiny and new coming from the dealership. The car travels thousands of miles over the years and begins to break down. The engine starts to burn oil. The upholstery fades and tears. It's ultimately left along the side of the road to rust. Yet I feel there is always hope. Maybe someone will painstakingly restore the car to it's past glory.
This painting was featured in the 2012 Watercolor USA Exhibit in Springfield, Missouri.

Rust Never Sleeps
The newest addition to the "Car in Snow" series. As I've previously mentioned this series has been the most successful for me in artwork competitions. This painting depicts a 1984 Chevy Cavalier. The title is from a Neil Young song.

The Last Muscle Car (Award Winner)
This is the second time I've posted this painting. The painting received 2nd place (The Diane Knight Memorial Award) in the recent 27th Annual Juried Art Exhibit sponsored by Arts Rolla. Dion Dion served as juror and judge for the exhibit held at the Centre in Rolla Missouri.

Frozen Relic
I was recently informed that the painting "Frozen Relic" has been accepted into the Missouri State Fair Top 50 Exhibit. The Missouri State Fair's appointed juror picks 50 artworks for the exhibit. The State Fair artist's reception is August 6th. The fair runs August 7th through August 17th in Sedalia Missouri.
