Blue on Blue

Click to Bid, 8 by 10 inches, Acrylic on acid free illustration board

Over the years I must admit that my favorite subject matter in flowers is the iris, zinnia and rose.

This newly painted iris is from some photo references from the Botanical Gardens in St Louis.

Iris with Colorful Abstract

Click to Bid,  8 by 10 inches,  Mixed Media on acid free illustration board
We recently made a road trip to the Botanical Gardens in St. Louis Missouri.  The light was perfect for floral photography.  This iris painting is based on some of those photos.  I used a scrape book printing block to apply the black lines in the background.

Iris With Abstract

(Sold) 8 by 10 inches, mixed media on watercolor paper paper,
This painting represents a "change-up" for me.  The background was done while the paper was moist. The paint was applied with an eye dropper.  I then covered the background with frisket and airbrushed the flower.

This is another in the larger series of paintings on panel.  I used a poster board stencil to paint the edges of the flower while the background leaves are free hand airbrush.

Morning Iris

Not for Sale,     16 by 20 inches,   Acrylic on acid free illustration board
Working larger on this piece I decided to keep the edges very soft. This gives the painting a dream like aura.

Flaming Iris

It's my understanding that there are no true red irises.  In the same respect there are no blue roses.  However, some of the irises are very close in color to red.  This painting is a depiction of a real iris.  The colors in the painting are very much like the colors of the actual flower.

The violet and green once again are a great combination.  The reference photos used in this painting were from irises that grow in the woods behind our home.

April Iris

Sold           8 by 10 inches,           Acrylic on acid free illustration board
Our spring weather has been very seasonal.  We haven't suffered any late frosts and the irises are in full bloom.  I enjoyed painting this one because of the interesting muted colors.

Ruby Iris

Click to buy                    8 by 10 inches,            Acrylic on acid free illustration board
In a painting of this kind the background is almost as important as the flower itself.  Careful consideration is given to the light and dark areas in the background.

Ivory Iris

Sold          8 by 10 inches,           Acrylic on acid free illustration board.
I usually avoid painting white flowers due to the lack of color.  However, this iris has plenty of color. I like the combination of yellow and violet on the petals.
