July Stripe Zinnia

Click to Bid, 8 by 10 inches, Acrylic on acid free illustration board

Our zinnia garden is in full bloom and I used reference photos from the garden to create this painting. I painted the edges of the lower flower leaf soft to provide a somewhat 3D aspect to the piece.

Midsummer Zinnia

(Sold),
8 by 10 inches, Acrylic on acid free illustration board

Our zinnia garden was blooming nicely until late summer when the flower stems prematurely turned brown. Luckily I photographed them earlier in the summer and this painting is based on some of those photo references.

Monarch and Flower

My biggest challenge on this painting was coordinating the background values with the focal point.

Zinnia with Clouds

Click to Bid,   8 by 10 inches,  Acrylic on acid free illustration board
Our zinnia garden is in full bloom.  I saw this unique cloud pattern while in the garden the other day.  I photographed the cloud knowing it would work well with the flower.  I then combined the two photos to use as reference for this painting.

I've always find pink and magenta difficult to work with. However, I'm happy with the results in this painting.

Spring Beauty

Click to Bid,    8 by 9 inches,   Acrylic on acid free illustration board
I recently traveled to the St. Louis Botanical Gardens for a photo session.  I knew the irises would be  blooming when we decided to make the two hour trip.   The sun was slightly subdued at times as I photographed the irises.  The numbers and colors were fantastic.  I  learned that the bearded irises are the most popular at the gardens.  This painting is based on those photographic references.

I always find reds difficult to work with.  However, I do like the way the reds in this zinnia turned out.

Springtime Brunch

The lighting is more subdued in this painting.  My goal was to capture the look of an overcast spring day.

Monarch and Zinnia

I like how the sky and foliage in the background become an abstract framing the  flower and butterfly.

Two of a Kind

Click to bid                         7 by 10 inches,            Acrylic on acid free illustration board
I was late in planting our zinnia garden this past spring.  As a result we've only had numerous bloomers within the last few weeks.  I'm hopeful that we have a late first frost to keep them blooming for a longer period of time.
