I don't do a lot of figure painting.  I do remember what seemed like endless hours drawing the figure in college classes.  Many of the professors used timed drawing tests.  Many of the models were posed in fore shortened views which made the drawing even more difficult.  Maybe that's why to this day I usually refrain from it.
The airbrush has a unique history in painting the figure in the form of pin up girls.  Many of the great pin up artists of the 1930's and 40's used the airbrush.
