This is a painting of a 19th century iron.  The iron was placed on a wood stove over the fire box.  It would become hot and was then used for ironing clothes. After a few minutes it would be replaced on the wood stove to reheat.                                                                                                                                       The rusted metal contrasts well with the textured wood barn wall in this painting.
